Originally built by Mostyn School in 1923, Parkgate Baths soon opened to the public too.

The main pool was 100 yards long and, unusually, had a deep and a shallow side, rather than the usual deep and shallow ends.

In 1930, a ‘small’ pool was added – this one was 50 yards long, almost double the length of a standard indoor pool nowadays.

The Baths were very popular between the wars, but the intake and filtration systems – which drew in salt water from the River Dee – struggled to cope as the landscape changed from sea to marsh. They were closed in 1950 and the site – beyond the end of the North Parade – is now a car park serving the Wirral Coastal Park.

Thanks to the Parkgate Society.
