Port Sunlight Village had the Wirral’s first open air swimming pool, built in 1902 by Lever Brothers for the use of staff and their families, and open to the public in the summer months.

Former Levers staff remember early morning swimming at the pool before work.  This was the only heated outdoor pool in Wirral – the pool was warmed by recycled water from the factory.

It was fenced and the dressing huts had thatched roofs.  The Pool had a swimming club and it was used for school swimming lessons, as well as local schools holding swimming galas here.

The pool became too expensive to run and it closed in 1975.  The local garden centre’s car park now sits on the site.
